The storage hype began in 2000 - every paper was filled up with striving news about cost effectiveness, security and disaster recovery potential of storage solutions. A market that ran very well but nearly hidden in past times became public, bringing SAN and NAS implementation in nearly every IT-budget of Top 500 companies in the world.
2.  I/O-Throughput is never enough

Comparing the compelling announcements of new families of storage subsystems shows that I/O-Throughput reaches record levels concerning frontend, backend and cache throughput. But performance measurement of the installed base of all high end storage subsystem vendors will show that most of their boxes have to handle average I/O rates of 500 to 3000 I/O's per second. In fact, nearly 95 % of all networked storage applications could be handled by much less potential storage subsystems if I/O throughput were the only criteria.
3.  Escaping the Maintenance Trap

Europe's economical recession of the last four years led to budget lowering in nearly every industry followed by corresponding lower investments in IT-Hardware, Software, Infrastructure and Services. This led to the situation that a lot of computer centers are filled with relatively old hardware generations in computer systems and storage subsystems. Those machines where sold some years ago with a period of 36 to 48 month free maintenance threatening the industry now by running into expensive maintenance fees.
