1.  Middleware in Mobile World
    posted: 2005.06.04 - Size: 38 KB - Count: 2    Download...
The merger of telecommunications and information technology is the driving trend in the business of today. The number of Internet enable mobile phones outnumbers conventional computing devices connected to the Internet. Therefore, mobility and wireless connections are prerequisites for success in the future. In this opening column I lay the foundation for the fortcoming detailed speculations for middleware for mobile computing.
2.  Software Architectures for Mobile World
    posted: 2005.06.04 - Size: 99 KB - Count: 2    Download...
Service architecture is widely considered as a key enabler for future software systems. The rationale is that a cottage you can build in an ad-hoc manner by a skyscraper needs planning beforehand. In software systems, software architecture is considered as such a plan. OMG's Object Management Architecture (OMA) was one of the earliest in software architectures. It defined a bus to which everybody connected. For closed and bounded user base that solution worked in a reasonable manner. However, the user base of mobile world is counted in millions or in billions. In this kind of case, OMG's OMA does not scale.
3.  Client/Server Programming Model Is Not Enough
    posted: 2005.06.04 - Size: 25 KB - Count: 0    Download...
Client/Server, Request/Reply or RPC programming model has been useful. However, its usefulness is limited to "one-party" applications, active requestor, and static environment. In the mobile wireless world this is not enough. In order to meet the requirements of adaptable personalized context-aware services, we need alternative programming models suitable to peer-to-peer applications and to asynchronous state changes. In this column I skip p2p applications and concentrate on asynchronous.
4.  Context Awareness Challenges Location Transparency
    posted: 2005.06.04 - Size: 27 KB - Count: 0    Download...
Adaptive context-aware personalized applications will be of fundamental importance in the future Mobile World. These applications are assumed to produce rich and consistent user experience. The first commercially available context-aware services are customized information based on the current location. Such location-aware services challenge location transparency.
