Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) becomes increasingly important in software development, but there are challenges and risks in architecting and developing SOAs that warrant extra attention to process. One of the fundamental challenges is the design and construction of components that must be reused in the future.

This article (http://ibm.com/developerworks/ecma/campaign/er.jsp?id=250608&imid=55915637 ) describes an approach for using the IBM Rational Unified Process (RUP) framework in combination with Model Driven Systems Development (MDSD) and the Unified Modeling Language (UML) or Systems Modeling Language (SysML) to reduce risk in the development of SOA-components.
